Tips for Reading Barcodes
A barcode that is found usually at the back of a certain product is read by a barcode scanner. But you can also read the barcode manually. In order to read the barcodes efficiently, you should be able to understand it structure first.
The margins around the barcode symbols are collectively known as the quiet zone. It may seem trivial but the margins are required to be sufficiently wide in order for the barcode to be read by a scanner. The margin should at least be ten times wider as compared to the most narrow bar width.
Every barcode has a different set of characters. There are systems that use letters, asterisks, or their own patterns.
The data refers to the pattern of black bars and white spaces that can be wide or narrow. Four different types widths are incorporated in a barcode.
The check digit indicates the number at the end of the data before the stop character. It essentially doublechecks for any printing errors that may have occurred when the barcode was created.
The barcode having 12 digits is the most common. While most UPC barcodes have numbers underneath it, some do not. We are helping you decode the 12 digit number that each barcode has. Firstly, look for the sets of long lines that goes all the way down past all of the others and there should be three sets made up of two lines each. These lines are not the ones interpreted by the scanner but they give a distinction between two sets of data called the left and right. Next, make sure you can tell apart the different bar and space widths. For now, we’ll refer to these as numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 going from smallest to largest in size. Starting with the left part, start with the first space you see and write down its corresponding size. Repeat this step for all spaces and bars excluding the center lines. Group these sets into four with the alternate pattern of white and black. Begin with the first black bar on the right part. The set pattern is reversed but it is still in fours.
You should have two sets of six numbers. Each of these four-digit numbers can be translated into one digit. The values can be easily seen in different websites to learn more here on this topic.
